I’m Becky!!!!
Welcome to Broken Arrow Photography! I believe when choosing your photographer, you need the right fit for you and your family. Someone you can feel comfortable with, someone you can trust, and someone who will meet your needs. Hopefully I’m your girl, but if not, no hard feelings. More than anything do I want you to be happy with your experience from start to finish and that person may not be me. Honest.
How I began…
I have been shooting since 2010. It was summer break of nursing school when I dusted off my (then) Nikon D500 with a kit lens and studied it. See, I’m a researcher by nature, and I needed something non-medical to research. My children, Grace and Cole were 1st grade and pre-school at the time so perfect subjects, right??? After I graduated, I took some time from looking for a RN job to spend time with my son, who I had felt guilt over my latent return to school when he was 10 months old. I continued to shoot and grow as a hobbiest. I then took a job as a school RN that fit well with my life as a mother of two and a wife of work-a-holic. A year later, I welcomed the idea of starting my business. I continued to work for the school, that I loved, but then came a time to make a decision. It’s very difficult to do 2 things you love and give 100 percent. Photography won. I became a full time photographer and in 2020 (pre-pandemic) I opened a studio. When the studio was finished in March, Covid-19 blew the world up and out, but the studio is still standing. (wink)
Personal life…
I married my husband Jason in 2004! We have two teenagers mentioned above, and we have 2 dogs and 3, yes 3 cats. We live in Columbia IL. Growing up, I lived on 50 acres in rural Red Bud with my mom and dad and 3 older sisters. I enjoy arts and crafts and I love to paint! I just don’t have the time for it as much, but maybe some day. I’m definitely a home body and enjoy being countryside in our back yard whether we are fishing, lounging by the pool, riding side by sides, or just being still. I wouldn’t say I am a HUGE tv watcher, but I know every show of Roseanne like the back of my hand. One thing I love to do and think I do well is cook. Cooking outside has become a passion of mine. Pair that with my wine obsession, and things get a little thicc, so you’ll also see me at the gym. But in all honesty, in my spare time, I do laundry, dishes, run the vacuum, go to the grocery store…..because first, I’m a mom.
Personality…
I’m one of the loudest, smiliest people you’ll ever possibly meet. I like to hug and probably for too long. More like a squeeze. I’m definitely a extrovert, however I require a lot of introvert time. Make sense? I get overly excited about almost anything, bubbly! But I can shut down in the blink of an eye if I sense tension, (grouchy dads and picky moms at sessions can literally change my entire demeanor and the way I shoot). I’m known to laugh so hard I pee, not tinkle, my pants. I’m a enneagram 9 btw…..
Photography Style…
My photography style may not be everyones cup of tea. I shoot wildly with intent. I do believe many people (dads especially) think I have not done my job when their shoot is over. There is a method to my madness. I direct and try being a fly on the wall. I encourage families not to look at the camera, cuddle, laugh, console your crying child (YES! I take pictures of that) kiss your man, tickle your toddler, and just BE with your family. I don’t want to document you having a relationship with me and my camera. I want to document the relationship you have with YOUR FAMILY. Lifestyle photography, not portrait photography. So if you are looking for that “look at the camera and smile photographer,” I’m not your girl.
Gear…
I’m currently shooting with a Nikon z6 and Nikon z7. My go to lens is my z35 and z50. In studio I use my sigma art 24. For Seniors, I whip out the Nikon 85. I’m also beginning to learn lens baby, so watch out for all the artsy stuff I plan on getting into. I’m a Mac girl, and use Camera Raw for most of my editing, polishing in Photoshop.
That’s all folks but if you have ANY questions, shoot me a message. I’m a open book. <3
